Achilles

This is a strange little book, but rather evocative.  Halfway between a novel and a poem, it conjures up Achilles’s story in rich and dreamy prose, covering the main figures who interact with him in his story.  Perhaps because it dips in and out of the story, offering vignettes rather than a firm chronology, I found there to be something slightly unsatisfactory about it – although I appreciated the easy wash of the language.  Still, if you like the Trojan War myth, this is something you might well like to read to add another perspective on one of its most intriguing characters (and my undoubted favourite).
