I have broken our unwritten rules here, in the sense that this is a superb compilation of most of Warren’s best songs. He recorded many albums during a career that ran from 1976 to 2003, when he died of cancer. Much as I liked the guy, I would find it hard to make a case for any particular album satisfying our fairly stringent criteria for the description of a ‘classic’. This collection, though, must come pretty close.
The simple fact is that he was an extraordinary songwriter – his songs are not always comfortable or PC and he sometimes deals with things that aren’t easily discussed in ‘polite’ circles.
This would have a really good chance of making it onto my Desert Island Discs list for sure.
